MLB Network's ranking of top shortstops will please Red Sox fans originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

The Boston Red Sox had an awful 2020 season, but their roster entering 2021 does include some very good players.

One of them is Xander Bogaerts, who ranks among the best shortstops in all of baseball.

Where exactly does he fall in the hierarchy at the position? MLB Network is unveiling its top 10 players at each position, and it recently revealed the shortstop list.

Projected Red Sox batting order contains some surprises, especially off the top

Bogaerts came in at No. 3 behind Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies and Fernando Tatis Jr. of the San Diego Padres.

Here's the full list:

  1. Trevor Story, Rockies

  2. Fernando Tatis Jr., Padres

  3. Xander Bogaerts, Red Sox

  4. Francisco Lindor, Mets

  5. Trea Turner, Nationals

  6. Corey Seager, Dodgers

  7. Carlos Correa, Astros

  8. Bo Bichette, Blue Jays

  9. Javier Baez, Cubs

  10. Tim Anderson, White Sox

Bogaerts is one of the most underrated stars in Boston sports.

The 28-year-old veteran, as noted by MLB Network in the video above, ranks No. 2 in home runs, No. 1 in on-base percentage, No. 4 in slugging, and No. 3 in WAR among all shortstops over the last two years.

Hernandez explains why Cora was a big reason he joined Red Sox

Bogaerts batted .300 with 11 home runs and 28 RBI in 56 games during the shortened 2020 season. In his last full season in 2019, he batted .309 and set career highs with 33 homers and 117 RBI.

If the Red Sox are going to enjoy a bounce-back season in 2021, Bogaerts likely will be one of the players leading the charge.
