Jason Kipnis signs with Braves, praises Cubs originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

Jason Kipnis’s time with the Cubs has come to an end, at least for now.

The free agent second baseman announced Monday that he was signing with the Braves, after a single season with his hometown team. The deal is a minor league contract with an invite to MLB camp, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported. Kipnis joined the Cubs in a similar fashion last year.

“Also can’t say enough good things about the @Cubs org,” Kipnis posted on Twitter Monday. “Absolutely loved putting on that uni.. and although it was a weird, shortened season w/o fans, I’m grateful it happened at all! Would’ve loved to experience a full Wrigley in cubbie blue.”

Kipnis left the possibility of an eventual return open by signing off with, “#onedaymaybe.”

The Northbrook native made it clear all last season how much playing for the Cubs meant to him. He kept the ball from his first home run in a Cubs uniform.

“The plan from the beginning was to play in front of family and friends and all that stuff,” Kipnis said after Cubs’ last regular season game, “… But that being said, another part of the plan would also be to win the division, get in the playoffs and play for the Cubs in the postseason. So, we’ll enjoy that.”
