MLB DFS Picks Today: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks | Tuesday, May 10
Yahoo Stack of the Day: New York Mets at LHP Patrick Corbin — 5.0 implied runs
This season has somehow been even worse for Patrick Corbin, who saw a steep decline last year. Through six starts, he has five losses while suffering a 7.16 ERA and 1.81 WHIP. Though he has allowed only one home run, he has ceded 14 total extra-base hits, which has not mixed well with his 13 walks.
The Metropolitans are firing on all cylinders, and they will be rolling out a right-handed-heavy lineup tonight. Focus on Pete Alonso ($24), Starling Marte ($22) and Mark Canha ($16) as the power trio to target. Switch-hitters Eduardo Escobar ($16) and Francisco Lindor ($22) can be used to round out full stacks in order to take advantage of the weak Nationals pitching staff.
Corbin is also someone who may be worth targeting in the MLB player props market. Today, Corbin has a 4.5 over/under for his strikeout prop and the Awesemo projections have him for 3.9, which means that the under has a 69% chance of success. Through six games, Corbin has recorded more than four strikeouts only once.
Youngster Reid Detmers has flashed some upside, but the lack of minor league innings has shown through as well. The 22-year-old southpaw has been forced to learn on the job after the pandemic eliminated a full season of minor league ball. Detmers should have a long career, but tonight marks just his 11th appearance in The Show and he has a 6.33 ERA with eight home runs allowed in just 42.2 innings.
Tampa Bay has plenty of right-handed options, and Randy Arozarena, Wander Franco and Mike Zunino all have multi-home run upside. Yandy Diaz and Harold Ramirez can be used as part of a full stack or as a mini-stack at the top of the order. The Rays offense does not get a lot of attention, which makes them excellent differentiation plays in tournaments.
Top MLB DFS Target: RHP Lucas Giolito vs. Guardians — 3.5 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $44 | FanDuel $10,300 | DraftKings $9,700
Lucas Giolito gets a slight nod over Justin Verlander as the top pitcher Tuesday. Being at home with a slightly better matchup and chance to collect a victory are the main reasons. If you are not a fan of Giolito, by all means, roll with the two-time Cy Young Award winner and three-time runner-up in Verlander.
The Guardians do not have much power in their offense aside from Jose Ramirez, Josh Naylor and strikeout machine Franmil Reyes. Their projected lineup has an anemic .137 ISO with a 24.7% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers dating back to last season. Giolito strikes out righties at a 28.9% clip, and he is equally impressive against lefties, with a 29.5% strikeout rate. The White Sox are also nearly 2-to-1 favorites to garner the win tonight.
Secondary MLB DFS Target: LHP Jesus Luzardo at Arizona Diamondbacks — 3.9 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $42 | FanDuel $10,000 | DraftKings $9,100
This looks like a breakout season for 24-year-old Jesus Luzardo. Through five starts, he has racked up 35 strikeouts across 26.1 innings. While the 12 walks are not great, he has at least limited hits and is allowing just over one baserunner per inning. The Diamondbacks have been a disaster on offense with a league-worst .198 average. They have a little bit of pop but also strike out as a tradeoff, which is definitely playing to the strengths of Luzardo.
Wild Card MLB DFS Target: RHP Martin Perez vs. Kansas City Royals — 4.1 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $33 | FanDuel $8,300 | DraftKings $6,500
Martin Perez is an excellent option as an SP2 on both Yahoo and DraftKings. Kansas City has a thin offense, and if he is able to navigate Salvador Perez and Whit Merrifield, he should be in for a solid performance. Martin Perez pitches to contact (80.9%) while relying heavily on his ability to induce ground balls (45.3%) and with limited walks (7.6%). In his last 68 starts, he has ceded five or more runs only nine times. If he can continue that trend and add a handful of strikeouts tonight, he will be an excellent secondary pitching choice.
