MLB DFS Picks Today: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks | Wednesday, April 27
Yahoo Stack of the Day: Atlanta Braves vs. RHP Mark Leiter Jr. — 5.2 implied runs
It is going to be warm in Atlanta with game-time temperatures in the low-70s, which is a departure from most games on the slate. Journeyman Mark Leiter Jr. has had a rough go this season, allowing an 11.05 ERA, two home runs and 1.91 baserunners per inning in two starts. The clock has run out on the 31-year-old, who was never able to achieve the success of his father and uncle, who combined for 30 MLB seasons across their respective careers.
Yahoo has done a nice job with goosing the salaries of the key Atlanta batsmen. Hopefully, that will keep their popularity in check. Matt Olson ($24), Ozzie Albies ($22), Austin Riley ($22) and Marcell Ozuna ($19) are the core four to target. Alex Dickerson ($7) is a pinch-hit risk in the event Chicago’s lone lefty reliever (Sean Newcomb) comes in from the bullpen, but he is a fine discount dandy if he lands a prominent role in the batting order. Travis d’Arnaud ($16) tends to be overlooked because he is a catcher, but he is as good as half of the designated hitters and corner infielders at the plate. Finally, Adam Duvall ($13) and his light-tower power are always in play.
Late Slate: San Francisco Giants vs. RHP Paul Blackburn — 6.1 implied runs
Trivia Time: Close your eyes and envision how long you think Paul Blackburn has been in the league and guess how many starts he has in The Show. Plot twist, the answer is tonight will be his 31st start and 34th appearance. These have been spread out over six seasons starting in 2017. No, injuries have not played a major part in his career — aside from 2018 when he was dealing with forearm and elbow issues, though these did not result in Tommy John surgery. Since joining the Cubs in 2012, he has logged 721 innings in the minors across nine seasons with appearances in the big leagues totaling 153 innings. Yes, this is pretty wild, as it certainly feels like Blackburn has been a large part of the DFS landscape over the last several years.
Focus on the three lefty bats at the top of the San Francisco order in Joc Pederson, Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford. Thairo Estrada has been much improved against same-handed hurlers, so depending on where he is slotted into the order, he is a potential option for those looking to create a full stack of Giants.
The Metropolitans will be saying hello to an old friend this afternoon in Steven Matz, who spent the first six seasons of his big league career in New York. While the soon-to-be 31-year-old does a decent job of limiting power, he allows a lot of contact with below-average strikeout stuff. The Mets are loaded on offense, and assuming no regulars get the day off, Starling Marte, Pete Alonso and Francisco Lindor are the power trio to target. J.D. Davis and Mark Canha provide some discounted pop at the bottom of the order, and switch-hitting Eduardo Escobar is always worthy of consideration.
Top MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Pablo Lopez at Washington Nationals — 3.3 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $45 | FanDuel $10,400 | DraftKings $9,900
This is a brilliant spot for Pablo Lopez, who has been sublime this season. The 26-year-old has a sterling 0.52 ERA and 0.75 WHIP accompanied by 17 punchouts in 17.1 innings. So far this season, the Nationals are averaging just over three runs per game with just 11 home runs in 19 tilts. If Lopez is able to neutralize Juan Soto and Josh Bell, he should be in for a strong outing tonight.
Secondary MLB DFS Picks Target: Shohei Ohtani vs. Cleveland Guardians — 3.2 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $43 | FanDuel $10,500 | DraftKings $9,000
This will be the fourth appearance for Shohei Ohtani, who has a wicked 26 strikeouts against four walks in 14.1 innings. Typically, he will throw around 70 to 80 pitches as the Angels have been careful with the player who doubles as their best pitcher and best hitter — apologies to Mike Trout, Anthony Rendon and Noah Syndergaard. The projected Cleveland lineup has a collective 24.8% strikeout rate against right-handed hurlers over the last two seasons. Even with a soft workload cap of 80 to 85 pitches, there is a decent possibility that Ohtani could earn his second straight quality start, which is key on FanDuel, considering his lofty salary.
Early Slate – MLB DFS Picks Target: Dylan Cease vs. Kansas City Royals — 3.0 implied runs
DFS Salary: Yahoo $48 | FanDuel $9,600 | DraftKings $8,500
Dylan Cease is the easy recommendation as the early-slate ace. This afternoon will mark his fourth start of the season, and he has continued to improve on last year’s breakout campaign. The Kansas City lineup projects as league average against righties from a strikeout perspective, and aside from Hunter Dozier and 31-year-old Salvador Perez, who led the league with 48 home runs and 121 RBIs last season, there are not too many fierce bats for Cease to mitigate. For perspective on Perez, he had 21 more home runs and 41 more RBIs than he had any other season of his career. That does not seem likely to be repeated going forward. Julio Urias in Arizona against the Diamondbacks would be the other ace worthy of consideration on the early slate.
Final MLB DFS Thoughts & Weather Notes for the Wednesday, April 27 Fantasy Baseball Slate
Today we avoid any precipitation issues, though with some of the afternoon and early-evening games, there will be some cold temperatures. Wednesday’s slates have a nice mix of serviceable pitchers as well as some potential gas cans on the mound.
