MLB DFS Picks, top stacks and pitchers for Yahoo, DraftKings & FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups, including the Rays | Friday, 10/8

Friday, Sept. 24, has a mega main slate headlined by a Coors Field game. Let’s get into the top MLB DFS picks for pitchers and stacks for Yahoo, DraftKings and FanDuel daily fantasy baseball lineups.

MLB DFS Picks: Spotlight Pitchers and Top Stacks, Friday, Sept. 24

Yahoo Stack of the Day: Tampa Bay Rays vs. RHP Edward Cabrera — 5.7 implied runs

While Edward Cabrera is yet another solid pitching prospect for the Marlins, he has struggled to make adjustments in the majors. In time he projects to be a middle-of-the-rotation starter, though for now he is targetable with bats. In his five outings, spanning 20.1 innings, he has a 5.31 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, five home runs and 16 strikeouts.

Lefties have not been fooled by Cabrera’s offerings, which is fortunate for Tampa Bay, as they will be able to adjust their lineup to press that advantage. Ji-Man Choi ($12) and Austin Meadows ($13) are ridiculously cheap and are excellent as one-offs, a duo and as part of a Rays stack. Brandon Lowe ($16) has a good chance at five plate appearances leading off, and he has a .365 wOBA and .268 ISO in his last 591 opposite-handed matchups. Joey Wendle ($14) projects as one of the better point-per-dollar shortstops, and righties Nelson Cruz ($19) and Randy Arozarena ($17) bring the big bats in the heart of the order.

Evening Slate

Toronto Blue Jays at RHP Bailey Ober — 5.0 implied runs

Rookie Baily Ober has pitched 103 innings this season, which is his largest workload in the last six years. In his three September starts he has advanced beyond the fourth inning only once while allowing a 6.57 ERA and four home runs. Minnesota has also been giving him an extra day between starts, and while they have not said they were shutting him down, he likely is going to be on a soft cap of 75 pitches and potentially pulled if he gets in a jam.

Toronto is in must-win mode, as they are one game behind the Yankees and one game ahead of the Mariners for the second Wild Card spot in the American League. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. continues his amazing run, leading the league in home runs and hits.

Ober has allowed ISOs over .225 to hitters from both sides of the plate, which puts essentially every Blue Jay batsman in play. At the top of the order, George Springer, Marcus Semien and Hernandez all have a ISOs over .210 in same-handed matchups over the last two seasons. For differentiation on the evening slate, Corey Dickerson, Randall Grichuk and catcher Alejandro Kirk have pop against righties. It is hard to go wrong with Toronto tonight.

Late Slate

Los Angeles Dodgers at RHP Humberto Castellanos — 6.1 implied runs

The Chase Field roof will be open tonight, which gives the hitters an advantage in the warm Arizona weather. Humberto Castellanos does not miss many bats, and with the Dodgers’ proclivity for getting on base, there will be crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the early innings.

Trea Turner, Max Muncy, Corey Seager and Mookie Betts are the core four to target. Gavin Lux and Luke Raley work for discounts, plus Will Smith is one of the best offensive catchers in the game. Justin Turner is solid in same-handed matchups as well, and he is a value on Yahoo $11 and FanDuel $3,300.

Spotlight Pitchers

Top MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Jose Berrios at Minnesota Twins — 3.7 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $41 | FanDuel $9,700 | DraftKings $9,500

Tonight Jose Berrios heads back to his old stomping grounds to face his former team with playoff hopes on the line for Toronto. Minnesota has been a middle-of-the-pack squad against right-handed pitchers, though they are not a particularly worrisome group. It is going to be in the mid-50s during this game, which is a slight downgrade to the offenses. Berrios has been locked in with a 2.38 ERA, 3.19 FIP, just four home runs allowed and 36 strikeouts in his last five starts. The Yahoo salary is a terrific bargain, and Berrios is fairly situated on DraftKings and FanDuel.

Secondary MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Dylan Cease at Cleveland Indians — 3.3 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $45 | FanDuel $9,000 | DraftKings $9,000

In his last 13 starts Dylan Cease has been a little unlucky, with a 4.02 ERA against at 3.51 FIP. The most impressive thing is that in 69.1 innings he has 101 strikeouts. This works out to an eye-popping 13.1 per nine innings, which is a rate visited by Randy Johnson and Roger Clemens. That said, Cease still backslides into his old ways from time to time, imploding on the mound. The happened just two starts ago when he lasted only 2.2 innings while allowing seven runs to the Red Sox. In that matchup he had a season-high five walks. However, that was the only time in his last 13 starts that he suffered more than three earned runs.

Wild Card MLB DFS Picks Target: RHP Logan Gilbert at Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim — 3.8 implied runs

  • DFS Salary: Yahoo $39 | FanDuel $8,200 | DraftKings $6,400

Rookie Logan Gilbert has thrown 113.1 innings this season, though in the two years prior to the pandemic he had 135 and 112.1, so he has at least experienced this workload previously. Seattle is two games out of the Wild Card, and with the season running out, they are likely to keep pushing Gilbert while they have a chance at the postseason.

The FanDuel salary is a non-starter since Gilbert rarely closes out the sixth inning, which keeps him out of the mix for quality starts — just six in 22 starts. On Yahoo he is in play as an SP2 on the late slate. DraftKings, however, gives him a $6,400 on a Coors Field slate. This is going to make Gilbert one of the more popular options tonight, but from a price-per-pitch perspective, he is a steal for 95 pitches against the Angels.

Final Thoughts for the Friday, Sept. 24 MLB DFS Picks Slate

The game in Detroit has already been postponed, and Cleveland and Cincinnati both have precipitation throughout Wednesday. Fortunately, the main slate looks to be clear, so that is one fewer variable to worry about.
