Mitchell's Olivia Prunty lands on top-50 watch list for national high school gymnast of the year

Jan. 19—MITCHELL — Mitchell High School sophomore gymnastics standout Olivia Prunty is one of 50 nominees for the USA Today High School Sports Awards gymnast of the year award, the publication announced recently.

The watch list included athletes based on their season performances, past state championships and state, regional or national recognition. A national team of 25 members and a gymnast of the year will be selected later this year. Prunty and Estelline/Hendricks' Sadie Johnson are the lone representatives from South Dakota on the list.

Prunty is the state's leader in floor (9.750) and vault (9.675) scores this season, while ranking second (37.975) in all-around and third (9.500) on bars. A year ago, she powered Mitchell to its eight team state championship all-time and finished in the top-five of four of the five individual events.

After competitions on Friday at Huron and Saturday at Sioux Falls Lincoln, Mitchell will compete in a triangular on Jan. 23 in Madison and on Jan. 27 at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet in Watertown. The state competition will take place on Feb. 9-10 in Pierre.
