Mitchell volleyball falls to Brandon Valley in road finale

Nov. 1—BRANDON, S.D. — Mitchell volleyball put together a hard-fought effort, but the Kernels fell to Brandon Valley in their road finale Tuesday night at Brandon Valley High School. The Lynx defeated the Kernels in straight sets, with set scores being 25-23, 25-15, 25-20.

Both the Kernels and the Lynx went back and forth in the first set, with the scores being tied late on three separate occasions. Brandon Valley was able to win the first set without needing extra points. In the second set, the Lynx went on a 10-1 run after only being up by three points in the early stages. The third and final set was a repeat of the first set, with both teams trading the lead. Brandon Valley was able to pull away in the end to secure the match victory.

Sawyer Stoebner led the Kernels on the attack with five kills, while Lauren VanOverschelde had four kills. Addie Siemsen picked up 13 assists on the night in addition to nine digs, four service aces, and five total blocks. Stoebner also led the Kernels defensively with nine digs, while Tianna Meadows led the team in total blocks with six.

For the Lynx, Jersie Melcher had a game-high 12 kills, with Abby Gruber picking up 11 kills. Defensively, Sydney J. Benson had 19 digs, with Lexi Gawarecki also collecting eight digs.

Mitchell (6-16) will return home for its regular season finale 7 p.m. Thursday night, against O'Gorman. Brandon Valley (14-12) will travel to Huron Thursday.
