Mitchell Marlins to host three-day Peewee B state tournament for third year in a row

Feb. 14—MITCHELL — The Mitchell Activities Center will play host to the South Dakota Amateur Hockey Association's Peewee B state championships from Friday, Feb. 16, through Sunday, Feb. 18.

For the first time since the 2019-2020 season, the Peewee B tournament will utilize a seven-team bracket, with nine games scheduled over the weekend. The age group includes kids between ages 11 and 12.

Fourth-seeded Watertown (5-8-0-1) will take on No. 5 seed Yankton (4-9-0-1) in the lead-off game at 2 p.m. on Friday. No. 3 Brookings (11-2-0-1) follows with its matchup against No. 6 Oahe (3-11) at 4:30 p.m. The host Marlins draw the seventh seed and will take on No. 2 Aberdeen (11-2-0-1) in the nightcap at 7 p.m.

Mitchell has yet to win a game this season, going 0-14 on the year. Top-seeded Rushmore finished the year undefeated at 14-0, earning a first-round bye. The Thunder scored 186 goals on the season and only allowed 24, both bests in the division. They will meet the winner of Watertown-Yankton in the second semifinal game at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

The first semifinal game will take place at 4:30 p.m. featuring the winners of Mitchell-Aberdeen and Brookings-Oahe. The championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, preceded by the consolation championship (9 a.m.) and third-place game (11:30 a.m.).

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — Following a four-year absence at the highest level of peewee competition in the state, the Marlins will head to the Vernon Arena along with seven other teams for the Peewee A state championships.

Under head coach Kris Polreis, the Marlins finished the year 9-7 despite having a minus-8 goal differential, their best showing in the division since the 2017-2018 season. They scored a season-high 11 goals in their game against Brandon Valley on Nov. 26.

Mitchell is slotted into the fourth seed and will face off against No. 5 seed Watertown at 5 p.m. Friday. The winner of the game will face either top-seed Rushmore or No. 8 Yankton in the 5 p.m semifinal game on Saturday.

The other quarterfinal matchup are No. 3 Aberdeen against No. 6 Huron, and No. 2 Brookings taking on No. 7 Oahe. The winners of those games will meet in the other semifinal game Saturday at 3 p.m. While Rushmore (15-1) led the division with 171 goals scored, Brookings (14-2) only allowed opponents to find the back of the net 14 times in the regular season.

The Peewee A championship game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. puck drop on Sunday, with placement games beginning at 8 a.m.

HURON, S.D. — The other Marlins team in action at the state tournaments this weekend is the girls 14-and-under squad competing in Huron for the state championship.
