Minor league team will celebrate 'Jamaican Bobsled Night' with 'Cool Runnings' uniforms

With the Winter Olympics just around the corner, it’s the perfect time to reminisce about that classic 1993 movie, “Cool Runnings,” which was based on the true story of Jamaica’s first-ever Olympic bobsled team. The movie is turning 25 this year, and the Charleston RiverDogs, the single-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have taken the lead in celebrating that anniversary. On Wednesday, the RiverDogs unveiled special uniforms that were directly inspired by the Jamaican flag and “Cool Runnings.”

Those uniforms won’t be worn on just any old night, though. They’ll be worn on May 3, which the RiverDogs have named “Jamaican Bobsled Night.”

Doug E. Doug, who played Sanka Coffie in “Cool Runnings” is going to be there, and he’ll do a meet-and-greet with fans — complete with a bobsled-themed photo opportunity. There will also be pushcart races and Olympic trivia, with medals given out to the best of the night. The Jamaica-inspired jerseys will also be auctioned off throughout the game.

There’s only one more thing that Jamaican Bobsled Night needs. Doug E. Doug has to start the game with “feel the rhythm, feel the rhyme, get on up, it’s baseball time — play ball!!!” That would make the evening truly complete.
