Minnesota stops spring game to give walk-on a scholarship
Minnesota defensive end Sam Renner got a big surprise during Thursday night’s spring game.
Renner, a walk-on, got a scholarship during the game. Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck stopped the game to award Renner a scholarship in front of the entire team and fans watching the game. Pretty cool.

Fleck’s one of the most creative coaches when it comes to giving walk-ons scholarships. A year ago, Blake Cashman got a scholarship in an Easter Egg hunt. And then over the summer, a walk-on got a scholarship via a t-shirt cannon. You may think Fleck’s antics are a little over the top sometimes, but we’re here for him to continue to give walk-on players scholarships in fun ways.
Renner, a Minnesota native, played on special teams in 2017 and will be a redshirt junior in 2018. The spring game was played Thursday night because inclement weather is forecast in Minneapolis for Saturday.
