Miguel Cabrera lifts a sacrifice fly to center field to bring home Victor Reyes and give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st
Tiger Woods found himself 21 shots off the lead entering the final round of The Northern Trust, but that didn't mean he was ready to pack it in and move on to the BMW Championship next week. No, no, no ... Woods needed a good finish to help his chances of getting back to East Lake and he wasted no time Sunday in doing so. A perfect drive and a dart at the first set up Woods for his first birdie of the day after narrowly missing out on one Saturday.
The current situation between the Baltimore Ravens and safety Earl Thomas is not a good one. After getting into a skirmish with teammate Chuck Clark on Friday, Thomas was sent home and did not report back for practice on Saturday. Now, Baltimore has decided to either trade or release him, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The Las Vegas Raiders continue to rebuild and retool their roster, especially on the offensive side of the ball. On Saturday, the Raiders added veteran running back Theo Riddick to their roster. And in a corresponding move, the team released former CFL star William Stanback, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Imagine being able to walk around with two of golf's best for what felt like a casual round of golf. In their case, it also looked like a casual round. Woods used his putter to go over a steep slope from behind the 18th green, and he made a 6-footer coming back to end with a birdie.
The No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft is a nice place to be for the Warriors. Like every team in the league, the Warriors have plenty of needs, especially after a down season. There is a good chance that the Warriors shop this pick hard to find veteran help for their planned return to the NBA Finals, but if they don't move the pick then their priorities should include the center position, depth in the backcourt and, most importantly, NBA ready talent.
The Baltimore Ravens have terminated the contract of seven-time Pro Bowl safety Earl Thomas, who got involved in a fight with a teammate Friday and did not attend practice Saturday. The action steams from Thomas' fray with defensive back Chuck Clark at practice after Thomas admittedly blew a coverage assignment. Although the Ravens don't have someone else with his talent at free safety, keeping Thomas would have created the potential for poor chemistry on a team with aspirations of playing in the Super Bowl.
It seemed appropriate on a day when two fellow competitors at the Northern Trust shot scores uncomfortably close to his age that Phil Mickelson announced his plan to debut on the PGA Tour Champions. Scottie Scheffler's Friday-morning 59 briefly appeared like it wouldn't even be low round of the day until Dustin Johnson flatlined his way to a 60 in the afternoon. Like Roger Bannister's 4-minute-mile, the '60' barrier seems to fall now with the frequency of a one-legged drunk on an ice rink, and those low rounds by Scheffler and Johnson might have reminded Mickelson that the days when he can hang with that kind of firepower are fewer and farther between.
Expectations understandably are high for No. 1 overall draft pick Joe Burrow at Cincinnati Bengals camp. Not mistake-free, mind you — but even on his poor plays, Burrow seems to be earning respect from the veterans in camp. On Thursday, Burrow threw what was described by The Athletic as a bad interception, with Bengals linebacker Josh Bynes reportedly able to step in front of the pass easily and pick it off.
The first professional victory of Sophia Popov's career came at a major championship on Sunday when the 304th-ranked German won the Women's British Open at Royal Troon. Popov recovered from a bogey on the first hole by making five birdies for a 3-under 68 in the final round, leaving her 7 under par overall and two strokes clear of Jasmine Suwannapura of Thailand (67). Wiping tears from her eyes, Popov tapped in a bogey putt at the last to complete one of the most unlikely wins in the tournament's history.
The Chicago Bulls found out Thursday they own the fourth overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft, their first top-five pick since 2008. It's the fourth time in franchise history the Bulls have had the fourth pick, a spot from which they drafted Eddy Curry (2001), Marcus Fizer (2000), and Tom Boerwinkle (1968). Bulls VP of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas did not give much insight into what needs he would aim to address with this selection, instead pledging, like most executives, to draft the best player available.
Tyson Fury has responded to Floyd Mayweather after the American offered to train his compatriot Deontay Wilder ahead of Fury vs Wilder part III. Mayweather, who has recently announced plans to become “one of the best trainers in the world”, was speaking at a Q&A session on his UK tour when he offered to help Wilder prepare for the third and final fight in the trilogy. “If I train [Wilder] I can teach him how to win,” Mayweather said.
More rumors began circulating on Friday that Lonzo Ball may be included in trade talks this off-season after Jay Williams reported as such on his radio show. I'm hearing things around New Orleans that Lonzo may be used as a trading asset in New Orleans…, Jay Williams of ESPN. For a variety of reasons, Ball will likely not be traded.
''He said, 'Bro, what am I supposed to be working on again?''' Claude Harmon said Saturday as he watched his pupil set another personal record in The Northern Trust. Johnson was an astounding 11-under par through 11 holes Friday and had the golf world curious if he would go as low as 57 to set the PGA Tour record. Instead of the fast start, it was a big finish.
Back-to-back early playoff exits were enough to make the Washington Capitals realize they made a mistake. In the two years since promoting top assistant Todd Reirden instead of giving Stanley Cup-winning coach Barry Trotz a raise, they've been knocked out of the playoffs in the first round. On Sunday, the team fired Reirden days after losing a five-game series to Trotz's New York Islanders and moved toward hiring the seventh coach since Alex Ovechkin entered the NHL.
When Al Avila promoted third baseman Isaac Paredes and pitchers Casey Mize and Tarik Skubal on Aug. 17, he made his intentions clear: He wants the Detroit Tigers to make the playoffs in 2020, and in a shortened MLB season, there never has been a better opportunity for a rebuilding organization to join the hunt. "We're still trying to win as many games as we can," said Avila, the Tigers' general manager.. "I mean, we'd love to be in the playoffs this year.
With the new regime in Washington, led by head coach Ron Rivera, the goal going forward was to rebrand the franchise and create a winning culture going forward. Through five training camp practices, the difference is already palpable, according to veteran running back Adrian Peterson, who says that it's 'night and day' from what he saw with the team last year. As one of the older players in the NFL, AP knows what it's like to go through camp with a coaching staff who may be on the way out, and he definitely knows what it's like to be playing with a team who has a goal in mind and is on it's way to accomplishing that.
One of the most fun storylines for the Washington Football Team over the summer is now over, as news has broken that rookie TE Thaddeus Moss has been waived from the squad. Moss was a member of the National Championship-winning LSU team in 2019, but he went undrafted in April and signed with Washington shortly after the draft came to a close on Saturday. After working out with the team throughout the summer and the start of training camp, Moss has been released, and will now look to sign with another team that may want him.
ers General Manager John Lynch has enjoyed watching left tackle Trent Williams square off with defensive end Nick Bosa at practice and Williams has also been relishing the experience. Williams came to the Niners in a trade after sitting out the entire 2019 season in Washington and is working his way back into playing shape this summer. He said the changes to the offseason schedule have made that more challenging, but that he's lucky to have “one of the best rushers in the league to go up against every day.
