Midfielder Eryk Williamson signs contract extension with Portland Timbers originally appeared on NBC Sports Northwest

Good news Timbers Army and Rose City soccer fans… Portland Timbers midfielder Eryk Williamson is staying in Rose City as the two parties have reached a contract extension.

The 23-year-old midfielder from Alexandria, Virginia, has been with the club since the 2018 season. Portland acquired his MLS Homegrown Player rights from D.C. United in exchange for $100,000 General Allocation Money in 2018, $100,000 Targeted Allocation Money in 2019, a 2018 international spot and a second-round pick in the 2020 MLS SuperDraft on January 23, 2018.

This is big news for the Timbers after Williamson was one of the bright spots last season.

Last season was a bit of a breakout season for the midfielder. He recorded a career-high three goals and five assists in 21 appearances (17 starts) during the 2020 MLS regular season. In the previous two seasons, Williamson logged 234 total minutes of game action.

“Signing Eryk has been a key objective of the club’s for the past 12 months and we are delighted that Eryk’s belief in the club mirrors our belief in him,” said Timbers General Manager and President of Soccer Gavin Wilkinson. “Eryk is a unique talent and we are looking forward to seeing his continued growth and performance as a Timbers player.”

Ross Smith breaks down why the Timbers made the right move extending Williamson’s contract in the video below. Not only does the midfielder see the pitch extremely well, but he remains calm under pressure, attacks the space given to him, and makes the right pass:

“Eryk is an extremely talented and creative player with many great attributes on and off the field,” said Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese. “I very much believe in the development of American players and am incredibly excited to see him continue his career in Portland.”
