Middle school: Mullens, Greater Beckley Christian victorious

In what was the game of the evening, Mullens Middle School hit three 3s in the final 3:45 and outscored Independence 9-2 in the final two minutes to give the Rebels a 44-38 win at the New River CTC Invitational Tuesday at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.

Talen Muscari drilled a three to give Mullens a 36-34 lead after Brock Green, who played on a bad ankle after a fall in the first half, hit a jumper.

After Green scored on a putback, Ryder Chapman drilled a big 3 with 2:04 remaining to give the Rebels the lead for good 39-36. Mason Bailey then had the third that gave the Rebels a cushion with 1:17 left.

Muscari, the premier area eighth-grade player, had 27 points to lead all scorers.

Broc Johnson had 20 to lead Independence.

Mullens moves on to face Greater Beckley on Saturday. Independence will face Eastern Greenbrier on Friday.

Greater Beckley Christian 43, E. Greenbrier 35

Eli Sexton poured in 19 points to lead Greater Beckley Christian to a 43-35 victory over Eastern Greenbrier.

Eastern Greenbrier took an early lead and led 13-9 after one quarter, but a 16-7 Greater Beckley advantage in the second quarter gave the Crusaders a lead they would not relinquish.

Michael Moore had 13 points and 10 rebounds for GBC.

Eastern Greenbrier was led by Dravin Ambler's 15 points.

Greater Beckley converted 9 of 10 free throws to 4 of 11 for Eastern Greenbrier.
