Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh took a $4.05 million pay cut as part of a contract renegotiation and extension after the 2020 season.

On Saturday, he made $500,000 of that back -- and gave himself a chance to recover at least $1.2 million more -- when the Wolverines ended all manner of negative streaks with a 42-27 victory over Ohio State that gave them a share of the Big Ten East Division title and a spot in next weekend’s conference championship game.

Under his new contract, reaching the title game gives Harbaugh a $500,000 bonus. Winning the Big Ten championship would give him an additional $1 million and assure that Michigan would play in one of the six games connected to the College Football Playoff, which would be worth another $200,000. If that game is one of the CFP semifinals, he’d get $300,000 more.

The amounts connected to the Big Ten achievements are multiples of what Harbaugh had been able to get under his previous contract, which had called for him to have $8.05 million in basic compensation from the school for the 2021 season. That deal called for Harbaugh to get $125,000 if the Wolverines played in the Big Ten title game and an additional $125,000 if they won it.

The previous agreement had been scheduled to expire after this season. The new deal is set to run through the end of the 2025 season.

Prior to Saturday, the Wolverines never had made the Big Ten title game – in no small part because they had lost eight consecutive games to Ohio State, five under Harbaugh.

Unlike most Bowl Subdivision head coaches, Harbaugh never has been eligible for a bonus from Michigan for the team appearing in a bowl game other than those connected to the CFP.
