With the news that Michigan football elevated two behind-the-scenes coaches within the recruiting department, it’s a good time to take a look at all of the various changes that have taken place in Ann Arbor this offseason.

While we’re not accounting for every change, like additions or subtractions to the analyst roles — though notable additions include Ryan Osborn and Kyle DeVan this offseason — there’s been an astounding amount of movement this offseason.

In fact, only two coaches remain in the roles they previously had: offensive coordinator Josh Gattis and defensive line coach Shaun Nua.

Below, you can find all of the various changes that have taken place to the coaching staff, where they came from previously, and who they replaced in said position.

List

What an all-Michigan NFL team would look like after the 2021 NFL draft

RB coach - Mike Hart

Hart replaced Jay Harbaugh, who moved to coach tight ends -- where he originally coached from 2015-16 -- while maintaining his special teams coordinator role. Hart arrives after having spent the past few seasons with Indiana.

As mentioned, Harbaugh has been moved to tight ends, replacing Sherrone Moore who moved to the offensive line.

OL coach - Sherrone Moore

Sherrone Moore is now coaching the offensive line after having been the TE coach since 2018. Formerly an offensive guard at Oklahoma, Moore also has added the co-offensive coordinator title. He replaces Ed Warinner, who is now the run game coordinator at FAU.

QB coach - Matt Weiss

Matt Weiss came aboard after being the Baltimore Ravens' run game coordinator the past few seasons. He replaces former QB coach Ben McDaniels, who is now with the Houston Texans.

Defensive coordinator - Mike Macdonald

Macdonald replaced Don Brown as the new defensive coordinator for Michigan football. He spent the past three seasons as the Baltimore Ravens linebackers coach. Brown is now the defensive coordinator at Arizona.

LB coach - George Helow

Helow came aboard after being Maryland's linebackers coach last year. He shifted to linebackers from safeties soon after arriving in Ann Arbor, with the vacancy left by Brian Jean-Mary -- who departed for Tennessee this offseason.

S coach - Ron Bellamy

Bellamy initially came to Michigan football as the wide receivers coach, taking the role off Josh Gattis' plate. However, when Jean-Mary left for Tennessee, the former West Bloomfield head coach shifted to the other side of the ball. He replaces Bob Shoop, who never coached in a game for Michigan.

Defensive backs coach - Steve Clinkscale

Michigan initially hired Maurice Linguist away from the Dallas Cowboys to be the cornerbacks coach. However, Linguist was courted away to be the head coach of the Buffalo Bulls. The Wolverines secured Steve Clinkscale away from Kentucky, where he will oversee the defensive backs, likely with an emphasis on the cornerbacks. His title includes defensive pass game coordinator. He ultimately replaces Mike Zordich, one of Jim Harbaugh's original hires in Ann Arbor. Zordich is now coaching at Central Michigan.

Director of player personnel - Courtney Morgan

Courtney Morgan came aboard after having served the same role the past two years at Fresno State and San Jose State. He replaces Mark Taurisani who departed for Illinois this offseason.

Director of recruiting - Aashon Larkins

Larkins came aboard as a defensive analyst in 2019, after having been FCS Bethune-Cookman's director of recruiting and special teams coordinator. In 2020, with Bob Shoop on leave, Larkins worked with the safeties. He was elevated to director of recruiting this offseason, replacing Matt Dudek, who departed for Mississippi State.

Director of scouting - Jerret McElwain

McElwain came to the staff when his father, Jim McElwain, was hired as the team's wide receivers coach in 2018. This offseason, he was elevated from being an assistant in the recruiting department to the director of scouting. It's unclear whether or not Michigan previously had that role.
