During Monday night’s Democratic National Convention, Michelle Obama delivered a striking speech urging everybody, especially groups with disproportionately low voter turnout like young people, to vote in the upcoming presidential election.
In true Michelle Obama fashion, the former FLOTUS used her sartorial choices to double down on her message. Wearing a gold necklace garnished with the word “VOTE,” she urged Americans to “vote early, in person if we can. We've got to request our mail-in ballots right now, tonight, and send them back immediately and follow-up to make sure they're received. And then, make sure our friends and families do the same.”
The country heard Obama’s message loud and clear, and paid special attention to her always-on point sense of fashion. Today, the fourth most searched topic on Google Trends is “VOTE necklace,” which has garnered over 20,000 searches and counting since her speech aired.
Michelle Obama’s particular necklace was custom made for her by Jamaica-born, L.A.-based designer BYCHARI. “I had created a VOTE necklace for the last election and knew I was going to do it again,” said designer Chari Cuthbert in a statement. “As we started our outreach, I was honored when Michelle Obama’s stylist asked for one and am thrilled she is wearing it!”
