Michael Jordan’s impact reaches far beyond the basketball court.

The NBA legend and owner of the Charlotte Hornets has donated $10 million of his personal funds to open two medical clinics in his home state of North Carolina, bringing his total donation for health care to $17 million. Novant Health announced Monday that the contributions will mean clinics can open in early 2022 in New Hanover County, North Carolina, where Jordan grew up and attended high school in Wilmington.

“I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown,” Jordan said in a statement. “Everyone should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance. Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life.”

This isn’t the first time Jordan has pledged to contribute to health care. Over the past two years, the former player and owner of the Washington Wizards has donated $7 million to Novant Health, enabling the creation of two Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics in Charlotte.

Jordan’s commitment to philanthropy extends beyond health care as well. Following the death of George Floyd in May 2020, Jordan announced that his athletic wear company, Jordan Brand, would donate $100 million over the course of the next decade for “racial equality, social justice and greater access to education.”

According to Novant Health, both of Jordan’s clinics in Charlotte have treated a total of over 4,000 patients and administered more than 1,000 COVID-19 vaccines.
