FRISCO, Texas — In the wake of Carson Wentz’s massive four-year, $127 million extension with the Philadelphia Eagles, there has been no shortage of chatter in the Lone Star State about whether Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, who is entering a contract year, deserves a deal in that neighborhood.

One person who doesn’t understand that line of thinking is former Cowboys great and Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin. When asked by reporters for his take on the situation outside the Ford Center on Wednesday, he offered an impassioned (does he know any other way?) defense of Prescott.

“Listen, I think the world of Dak, man — and I’m talking about [not] just watching him on the football field, but just watching him as a man,” Irvin said. “And I keep telling people man, you’re looking at New England and you marvel at what they’ve done. And the one thing that very few people tend to mention is that the heart and soul and leader of that team is [quarterback] Tom Brady. And when you have the heart and soul and leader of your football team at that position … I don’t know why we’re even talking about his money. That’s worth $15-$20 million by itself per year, and now you’ve got to play football also. So there’s no doubt in my mind, man, that Dak is the right guy.”

Irvin then grew more animated.

“Look at these teams … people, stop it! Look at these damn teams! The Dolphins, the Jaguars … they’ve been looking for a quarterback for over 15-20 years! This ain’t easy to find!

“It’s not easy to find and you don’t let one out of the door if you’ve got one. Let’s be real, here. It shouldn’t even be a discussion when we talk about it, and the amount of wins this man has had and the way he’s won football games. It shouldn’t even be a discussion. It really shouldn’t.”

Prescott, a fourth-round pick in 2016, has started every game for the Cowboys over the first three years of his career. He is 32-16 in the regular season as a starter, and is coming of a season in which he completed 67 percent of his passes for 3,885 yards, 28 total touchdowns and eight interceptions while leading Dallas to a 10-6 record and their first playoff win since 2014.

Prescott’s detractors label his accuracy and lack of consistency when operating within the pocket as negatives. Prescott is attempting to improve in both areas this offseason, and coaches are optimistic he’ll continue to rise.
