Michael Bennett flagged for another borderline roughing-the-passer penalty

For the second straight week, Philadelphia Eagles pass rusher Michael Bennett was hit with a roughing-the-passer penalty.

For the second straight week it came on what could easily be described as a clean football play.

Bennett flagged for going low last week

Last week Bennett got flagged for roughing Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins on a hit where Cousins fell gently to the ground. His infraction was specifically for going too low when Bennett hit Cousins below the knees while falling to the ground.

The penalty resulted in a first down deep in Vikings territory instead of a third-and-long situation that would have resulted from the sack. The Vikings went on to score a touchdown.

Too much weight on Eli this week

This week, Bennett hit New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, who had just released the football on a third-and-long screen pass to Saquon Barkley.

This penalty appears to be of the variety of the defender putting most if not all of his body weight on the quarterback, which also constitutes a penalty.

The play resulted in a first down at the Eagles four-yard line instead of a fourth down. Thankfully for Bennett, the Giants were the Giants and failed to capitalize, kicking a field goal after failing to get into the end zone.

But it’s another frustrating call for a defender whose job it is to attack the quarterback. The hit wasn’t vicious or malicious, and Manning was fine after the play.

Bennett has to be wondering what he’s supposed to do.
