Mets takeaways from Wednesday's win over Marlins, including home runs from Francisco Lindor, Pete Alonso, Ronny Mauricio
The Mets recorded 11 hits, including three home runs, en route to an 8-4 win over the Miami Marlins in spring training on Wednesday.
Here are the takeaways...
- Francisco Lindor gave the Mets a 2-1 lead in the top of the third with a monster two-run home run to right field. It was his first homer of spring training as he finished the day 1-for-3 at the plate.
- Pete Alonso hit his second home run of the spring with a shot that just cleared the left field wall, as he would finish the game 1-for-3.
- Tylor Megill sent the Marlins down in order in the first on 14 pitches, getting a pop out and two ground outs. Megill let up a leadoff single to Jean Segura in the second, who then came around to score on Jon Berti's two-out single to left. The righty's day was done after two innings of work, allowing the one run on two hits over 36 pitches (22 strikes).
Megill spoke to reporters during the game and said he was pleased with his outing, and added that he's been working on his curveball this spring and threw it a few times on Wednesday.
"Went well," Megill said. "Say the goal of the day was just throw strikes, as many as possible, off-speed, fastballs. So overall think it was good, felt good."
- Ronny Mauricio pinch-hit in the top of the ninth and crushed his third home run of spring training. Mauricio stayed in the game and played second base in the bottom of the ninth.
- Tomas Nido went 2-for-3 with two line drive singles to center field. Tim Locastro was hit by a pitch in the third and then stole second base. Locastro drove in two runs on a double to left field in the top of the fourth for his lone hit of the game. Backup catcher Michael Perez went 1-for-1 with an RBI double in the eighth.
- DH Francisco Alvarez went 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout. He showed off his speed by advancing from first to third on Locastro's double down the line.
- LHP Brooks Raley replaced Megill on the mound and allowed one run on three hits in his lone inning of work. RHP Stephen Nogosek tossed a scoreless fourth inning, allowing just one hit and recording a strikeout. LHP Zach Muckenhirn came in to pitch the bottom of the fifth and the first batter he faced reached on a throwing error by Brett Baty, and advanced to second. Back-to-back groundouts allowed the run to cross the plate, but Muckenhirn struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. to end the inning.
- Recently claimed RHP Sam Coonrod struck out two batters in his scoreless inning of work, as did righty Jimmy Yacabonis in the seventh.
- Baty finished the game 0-for-2 with a strikeout and Mark Vientos went 1-for-2 with a ninth-inning double.
