One of the biggest question marks surrounding Mets rookie Ronny Mauricio is what position will he find a home in at the major-league level?

On Friday, Mauricio will make his first big-league start at third base against the Cincinnati Reds.

The 22-year-old has played only at second in his 10 games with the Mets thus far, and despite being primarily a shortstop, New York is giving him a go at third base where he played in just 11 games throughout the minors (although played more there during Winter Ball).

“I have a pretty good idea of what Ronny can bring there,” Buck Showalter told reporters before Friday’s game. “We have trained eyes for third base…Hope to get him a game or two at shortstop before we’re done. Mo played a lot of third base at winter ball. It’s more of an adjustment to go to second than it is third.”

Mauricio has held his own at second base, albeit in a short sample size, having made zero errors and 18 putouts but feels even more confident manning the hot corner.

“I feel, personally, that shortstop and third base are the two best positions I can play,” he told reporters before the game. “…I felt like [the transition] was seamless.”

Whether or not Mauricio’s permanent home will be third base won’t be determined by just one game, according to Showalter. Brett Baty and Mark Vientos also play third base, making it a crowded position to figure out.

But Mauricio has played all over the infield (except first base) and even left field as he presents plenty of options for the Mets.

“I think he’ll present a lot of good options for us going forward,” Showalter said. “I like the fact we’re giving him a lot of looks at different places. We’ve got options there. Everyone has a personal preference. The good news is he presents himself well at three or four positions.”
