No. No no no no no. Respectfully, Smith is more than a “great guy." He’s a top young hitter in the league and an above average defensive first baseman. The guy finished fourth in the National League in OPS last year.
Your question is fair in that Smith’s value at a position other than first is diminished. He has worked hard to become a passable left fielder, but the ceiling there is lower than at his natural spot.
This is a short-term problem. The plan this year was for Smith to play first and Pete Alonso to be designated hitter. That didn’t work out, but with the universal DH widely expected in 2022, that can probably happen in another twelve months (and there are actually still people in the game who see an outside shot of the DH happening after all in 2021).
As you note, Smith is also a good-natured person with a deeply-felt social conscience. Production plus personality makes him perhaps the number one keeper in the entire organization.
