Mets claim infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from Diamondbacks

The Mets have claimed infielder Diego Castillo off waivers from the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The move brings the Mets' 40-man roster to 39 before the free agent signing of Harrison Bader becomes official.

Castillo spent last season at Triple-A Reno in Arizona's system, appearing in 124 games and slashing .331/.431/.410 for a .840 OPS. He smacked 33 doubles with three home runs and 72 RBI. He walked 97 times with 79 strikeouts over 556 plate appearances.

He does have some big-league experience, appearing in 96 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022 where he slashed .206/.251/.382 with a .633 OPS. Castillo had 13 doubles and 11 homers with 29 RBI over 262 at-bats with 75 strikeouts to 14 walks.

The 26-year-old has spent time across shortstop, second and third base during his minor league career across three organizations.

He also has spent some time in the outfield, as he played the majority of his innings (535) in left field at Triple-A in 2023 after playing 137.1 innings (out of 614.1 innings total) in right field for the Pirates.

Castillo was previously in the Yankees organization after signing as a free agent in 2014. He was dealt along with Hoy Park to the Pirates for Clay Holmes in July 2021.
