Who is starting for the Mets?

Max Scherzer looks to be the stopper of the Mets' losing run and keep his own hot run going.

Scherzer is coming off four straight solid performances (all Mets wins) after a rocky start to the year. In his most recent outing against Philadelphia, he allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits while walking one and striking out nine in seven innings.

In his last four starts, he has allowed just three earned runs over 25 innings with four walks and 28 strikeouts.

Through nine starts in his second season with the Mets, Scherzer has allowed 18 runs (17 earned) on 38 hits over 47.2 innings pitched, good for a 3.21 ERA (4.12 FIP). He has been dinged for seven homers while walking just 14 and striking out 48. The right-hander has posted a 1.091 WHIP

In a rare treat for Scherzer, the 38-year-old will be the younger of the two starting pitchers as Atlanta's starter is 258 days his senior.

Who is starting for the Braves?

Charlie Morton will get the ball for the Braves, making his 12th start of the 2023 campaign.

Morton, a Flemington, New Jersey native, is in his third season with Atlanta and has gotten off to a decent start, allowing 28 runs (26 earned) on 67 hits in his first 64.2 innings pitched, good for a 3.62 ERA (3.56 FIP). He has allowed six homers so far and walked 26 while striking out 72. The right-hander has posted a 1.438 WHIP, which is up .205 from his 2022 season total.

Morton is coming off a seven-inning performance that saw him scatter six hits, three walks and allow three runs while strikeout nine in a 6-5 loss at Arizona.

Upcoming schedule

The Mets and Braves conclude this three-game set on Thursday night at 7:20 p.m. on SNY.

And it could be a real pitchers' duel as veteran right-hander Justin Verlander (2-3, 4.25 ERA) takes the hill to face off against Atlanta's 24-year-old right-hander Spencer Strider (6-2, 2.97 ERA).
