Memphis football's Quindell Johnson expected to play vs. Tulane, per Ryan Silverfield

Memphis football will likely have its best defensive player back Saturday as coach Ryan Silverfield said Thursday he expects safety Quindell Johnson to play at Tulane (2:30 p.m., ESPN2).

Silverfield updated Johnson's status during his weekly interview on Sports56 with "Mornings with Greg and Eli".

"I think Quindell should be roaring back," Silverfield said. "During the season, I don't know who's 100 percent this far in, he'll battle through like he will and obviously we know what an immense addition in having him back would be to our entire defense, our team, our secondary."

Johnson, who has three interceptions and a forced fumble this season, didn't play last week against East Carolina due to an undisclosed injury. The All-AAC senior participated in team drills on Tuesday and Wednesday during open portions of practice viewed by media.

The game will also be Johnson's last college showcase in his hometown of New Orleans. He had an interception at Tulane in 2020 during the Tigers' 35-21 loss.

Without Johnson, the Tigers' streak of 11 consecutive games with at least one takeaway ended against ECU. ECU quarterback Holton Ahlers also picked the defense apart on 26-of-34 passing and the Pirates converted 10-of-15 third down attempts, the most Memphis (4-3, 2-2, AAC) allowed since Mississippi State converted 11 third downs in the season opener.

Johnson will be a boost facing Tulane (6-1, 3-0) quarterback Michael Pratt, who leads the AAC passing efficiency and is 16th nationally. Pratt is also averaging an AAC-best 9.5 yards per attempt.
