Memphis' buzzer-beating win over Tulsa extends the Tubby Smith era by another game

Memphis basketball fans might be eager to move on from the Tubby Smith era, but the team’s run at the American Athletic Conference tournament is delaying everyone from starting the process.

Kareem Brewton hit a floating and uncontested three-pointer as time expired to give the Tigers’ a 67-64 victory over Tulsa in the quarterfinals on Friday. While Memphis’ shot at winning the tournament to get a NCAA bid remains long, it will advance to play top-seeded Cincinnati in Orlando on Saturday afternoon.

It was reported earlier this week that Memphis may turn to hometown hero Penny Hardaway (and, in turn, Larry Brown!) to revive fan interest that has been flagging since the success experienced under John Calipari and Josh Pastner. Despite that noise, Tubby Smith urged his players to block it all out and compete in the conference tournament.

Having won seven of their last eight games, they seem to be doing a good job.
