They called it an instant classic, but there was nothing "instant" about this incredible playoff game between the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers last season.
It was May 3, 2019 in Moda Center and it took Portland and Denver an excruciating four overtimes to settle Game 3 of their second-round series -- a series the Trail Blazers would eventually capture with a Game 7 win on the road.
CJ McCollum played 60 minutes and one second and scored 41 points for the Blazers. Damian Lillard logged 28 points in 57:59. The Nuggets' Nikola Jokic played a whopping 64:58 and had a triple-double.
But this game's hero played just 23:35 -- and maybe that's why he ended up as the hero. He owned the fourth overtime as the freshest, most-rested player on the court. His name was Rodney Hood, the late-season acquisition from Cleveland who took the game over when no one else could do it.
Hood scored 7 of his team's 11 points in the final overtime, including a long three-pointer with 18.6 seconds left in the game to pull Portland from a one-point deficit into a two-point lead.
This game was exhilarating and excruciating almost all at the same time for Trail Blazer fans, as momentum ebbed and flowed. But in Portland, the final result was worth the wait.
A classic. Just not an instant classic.
