Charlotte 49ers quarterback Lee McNeill (Indian Trail, N.C.) was named as one of 14 recipients of Conference USA's Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Awards.

McNeill, the 2016 Conference USA Scholar-Athlete of the Year in Football, was Charlotte's starting quarterback in its inaugural season at the FBS level in 2015. This past year, he was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic all-District III team. One of nine players that played in all 46 games over the course of the 49ers first four years, he made nine starts at QB. He threw for 1,892 yards with eight touchdowns. McNeill obtained his undergraduate degree in business administration with a 3.97 GPA and is expected to earn his MBA in December of 2017. During his undergrad career he posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in all but one semester and earned a spot on the 2015 and 2016 C-USA all-Academic Teams.

This is the ninth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008. The conference annually awards the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarships to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.

Charlotte's previous winners of the C-USA Postgraduate Scholarship are: Lexi Betancourt, Softball in 2015-16; Chelsea Matson, Women's Cross Country in 2014-15 and Coye Still, Men's Track and Field in 2013-14.
