McAlester falls in double overtime nail-biter

Feb. 13—A game so intense, it needed free basketball to determine a winner.

McAlester hosted Coweta Tuesday inside the McAlester Activity Center for Senior Night festivities and the regular season finale, with the Lady Buffs falling in a 73-69 double-overtime nail-biter.

The Lady Tigers started hot, jumping out to an early 8-0 lead. But a triple from Katie Allen and a post bucket from Madi VanDorpe put the Lady Buffs on the board. McAlester next got points from Beaudee Nystrom and Tori Kilburn, cutting the Coweta lead down to four.

The Lady Buffs kept chipping away, with another three from Allen making it a slim 19-17 Coweta lead after the opening quarter

Rylan Lesnau got McAlester moving to start the second period, with a three-point play putting the Lady Buffs into the lead. That set off a back-and-forth between the two teams, trading scores and the lead.

But as the Lady Buffs made one final push, they used points from Kilburn Nystrom, Allen, and VanDorpe to rattle off a scoring run and take a 39-31 lead into the locker room break.

On the other side, Kilburn and Allen hit a pair of threes for McAlester to start the second half hot. Lesnau and Allen next added four more points, extending the lead to double digits.

Coweta struck right back, using a 12-0 run to end the quarter and trim the McAlester lead down to one point heading into the final period of play.

Lesnau, Kilburn, and Allen extended McAlester's lead once more, but the Lady Tigers rattled off another run to slim the Lady Buff lead back down to two points with 49.4 remaining in regulation. Kilburn was then fouled and sent to the line, putting the Lady Buffs up by two.

Coweta was able to nab an offensive rebound on the opposite end of the floor, tying up the game at 62-62 and sending it into overtime.

Both teams fought through the extra basketball period, with the Lady Tigers hitting a shot at the buzzer to force a second overtime. There, Coweta found an edge at the charity stripe, holding off McAlester for the win.

Allen led McAlester with 29 points, followed by Kilburn with 20 points, Lesnau and VanDorpe with seven points each, and Nystrom with six points.

Next up, the Lady Buffs will get back to work in the lab as they prepare for the postseason — scheduled for Feb. 20-24.
