Max Scherzer strikes out Vladimir Guerrero Jr. almost exactly 10 years after striking out his dad

Nationals ace Max Scherzer continues to prove, year after year, that age is just a number. The three-time Cy Young award winner, who turned 36 on Tuesday, has been one of Major League Baseball's best pitchers for much of the past decade.

On Wednesday, Scherzer made his second start of the 2020 season for Washington and cruised through his first six innings of work, allowing just two hits and no runs with nine strikeouts. However, there was a bigger story at play with one of his strikeout victims.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Scherzer threw a 3-2 off-speed pitch to Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. The 21-year-old phenom was completely frozen in the box as he was called out on strikes. 

It was the first time Scherzer has struck out Guerrero Jr., and it happened to come close to exactly 10 years from the day the ace struck out Guerrero Jr.'s father, nine-time MLB All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Sr.

In 2010, Scherzer was just a middle of the rotation starter in his first season with the Detroit Tigers. Quickly, he turned into one of Detroit's best pitchers and even won AL Cy Young honors in 2013. 

A decade after fanning Guerrero Sr. twice, Scherzer was able to get his superstar son out on strikes, a testament for how good Scherzer has been for so long.
