JAY CROUCHER: The Raiders draft their Darren Waller replacement in Michael Mayer, who's the heavy favorite, Connor, to be the first tight end off the board. He ends up being number three. What do you think of the pick?
CONNOR ROGERS: One of my favorite picks of the draft here, guys, in Michael Mayer. I thought he was the ninth best overall player in this draft. I knew he'd fall a little bit, because he's a tight end that tested as an average athlete. But what I care about is what he's been able to do on the field.
16 touchdowns over the last two seasons, in that same stretch, he's caught 89 first downs. You can trust him on the line of scrimmage as a blocker. You can kick him off the line of scrimmage as well in the slot. He understands how to shield defenders to win the football over the middle of the field. And he is a bully with the ball in his hand after the catch. I love this player. I think he's going to be a top 10 tight end in the NFL within two to three years of his career.
MATTHEW BERRY: And I think that's the key, Connor. I agree with you, love him in dynasty, especially if you play in a superflex league, where it's a tight end premium. I think Mayer should be one of the first rookies off the board this year. But I will tell you that it doesn't feel like there's going to be an immediate fantasy impact, as much as we all like the player, and we really do.
And there's a lot of positives here, right? Jimmy Garoppolo, very accurate, very accurate short, and has had a bunch of success with a tight end, obviously, in George Kittle. Josh McDaniels has traditionally used a tight end, and obviously had a lot of success with Rob Gronkowski and other tight ends in New England.
Here's the concern. Davante Adams, they add Jakobi Meyers, who plays a lot in the slot. They've got Hunter Renfrow as well. Meanwhile, Austin Hooper is there. OJ Howard is there. And this is a run-first offense. We expect a lot of Josh Jacobs again this year. So I just-- as much as we love Michael Mayer as a player, and I love him as a dynasty prospect, there's going to need to be some injuries for him to see fantasy relevance this year.
JAY CROUCHER: Yeah, absolutely loaded Vegas team, a bit of an afterthought, Vegas, at the moment, in that stacked AFC West. They're 12 to 1 to win the division. But fantastic draft for them so far getting Mayer and getting Tyree Wilson.
