Matt LaFleur on Aaron Rodgers situation: ‘It’s pretty disappointing’

When it comes to the ongoing conflict between the Green Bay Packers and quarterback Aaron Rodgers, coach Matt LaFleur is a man stuck in the middle.

In analogy form: he’s the kid suffering in the background during the early stages of divorce proceedings.

Speaking with Larry McCarren of the team’s website, LaFleur expressed disappointment in the escalating situation between quarterback and organization.

“Obviously, it’s pretty disappointing, considering all the success we’ve had over these past two seasons,” LaFleur said.

Rodgers, the league’s MVP in 2020, reportedly wants out of Green Bay after his frustration with the team’s leadership boiled over this offseason. The Packers insist they won’t trade him.

Since LaFleur took over in 2019, the Packers have won 26 regular-season games and played in back-to-back NFC title games. Rodgers has thrown 74 touchdown passes and only nine interceptions over that span.

The partnership with LaFleur has rejuvenated Rodgers’ career. In a modern offense built to make the quarterback’s life easier, Rodgers has evolved and thrived. The end result has been a lot of wins, two misses on the doorstep of the Super Bowl, and one of the NFL’s best offenses.

LaFleur doesn’t want to lose his future Hall of Fame quarterback and the player most responsible for his incredible success to start his career in Green Bay.

“The fact we’re in this spot is certainly not what I want, especially when you’re talking about the league MVP and all the great moments we’ve had together,” LaFleur said.

Following the conclusion of the draft on Saturday, LaFleur said he “can’t even fathom” not having Rodgers in 2021, but two sides might have no other choice if the rift can’t be solved.

“Hopefully we will resolve this and he will be back in a Green Bay Packer uniform,” LaFleur said.
