Matt Davidson leads White Sox's offensive explosion with three homer game

With a handful of games already in the books, your Major League Baseball home run leader is none other than Chicago White Sox designated hitter Matt Davidson. If you saw that coming, we’ll gladly take your lottery number predictions for Friday night.

Davidson clubbed an incredible three home runs on opening day to lead the White Sox to a 14-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals.

The 27-year-old’s big day began in the fourth inning, as he crushed a 90 mph fastball from Danny Duffy out to left field to help bring the White Sox back from an early deficit after starter James Shields allowed four runs in the first inning. Davidson’s fourth-inning blast brought the White Sox within one run.

His second home run occurred an inning later, and this time, Davidson added to his team’s lead. He tagged Blaine Boyer for a solo shot to left on an 86 mph slider, which put the White Sox up 6-4.

By the time he belted his third home run, the game was already out of hand. With the White Sox already up 11-4, Davidson belted a three-run shot, again to left field, to bring the team’s lead to 10 runs.

He joined a pretty small club with the performance.

Since the season started earlier than usual, Davidson became the first player to belt three home runs in a single game in the month of March.

Davidson didn’t get an opportunity to tie the record with another home run. The White Sox failed to get him another at-bat in the ninth inning.

Davidson was far from the only player on the club to send some balls flying on opening day. Shortstop Tim Anderson added two dingers of his own. Between Abreu, Anderson and Davidson, the team combined to tie an opening day record with six total home runs.

While one game tells us little about the rest of the season, Davidson spent a lot of time working on his swing in the winter. One of the people who gave him some tips was former White Sox slugger Paul Konerko, so perhaps this is the year Davidson will put it all together and bust out.

Does that mean we expect him to lead the league in home runs all season? Nope. Not when Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge are around.

Does it mean Davidson might be on his way to joining the 30 home run club this season? That might be more likely. He’s always been known for his power, and showed why with his performance Thursday.
