Virginia Tech will know its fate soon with two of the top running back targets left on the board. South Carolina three-star Mataeo Durant will commit July 8.
The 6-1, 190-pounder out of McCormick (S.C.) High will announce his college commitment just days after Florida two-star Caleb Steward will do the same (with Steward set to announce on the fourth of July). Both visited Blacksburg two weeks ago, and remain high on the Hokies.
Will the Virginia Tech staff be able to take both if they want to come? Or will they have to pass on the No. 45 tailback nationally and No. 14 rising senior in South Carolina - an emerging pipeline state - if Steward's choice is in favor of the Maroon and Orange? Certainly, "too many good players hoping to join the class" is definitionally a good problem to have.
With each having a similar style to the other - they are slashing-type speed backs who need to add weight if they want to consistently succeed between the tackles in college - the Hokie staff may have to determine which they prefer, rather than landing both (and holding onto both through National Signing Day).
