Mason Greenwood has withdrawn from England’s squad for the upcoming European Under-21 Championship group stage due to injury.

The Manchester United forward has been replaced by Norwich City’s Todd Cantwell.

Greenwood started and scored United’s only goal in Sunday’s 3-1 FA Cup quarter-final defeat to Leicester and was due to fly out to host nation Slovenia on Tuesday with the rest of Aidy Boothroyd’s squad.

The 19-year-old has however been forced to pull out and will play no part in the group games against Switzerland, Portugal and Croatia.

United are hopeful that Greenwood’s injury is not serious, but it is understood that he will not be able take part in training at Carrington this week.

Greenwood will be assessed by United’s medical staff ahead of their return to Premier League action against Brighton and Hove Albion on 4 April.

This year’s Under-21 Euros have been split across two international breaks, with the group stage to be completed this month before the knock-outs are played in June.

Greenwood’s call-up was his first involvement in an England camp since he and Manchester City’s Phil Foden were sent home from the senior squad for a breach of coronavirus protocol in September.

England’s opening game of the tournament sees Boothroyd’s side take on Switzerland on Thursday.
