Marysville girls, boys lead area in playoff eligible MaxPreps rankings: MHS opens week against Sutter in PVL league action

Jan. 19—Playoffs are right around the corner and to prepare for the upcoming postseason, the Sac-Joaquin Section released its bylaws for its regulations and formats surrounding criteria to make the playoffs.

According to the SJS, the Pioneer Valley League, Capital Valley Conference and Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League will each receive three automatic playoff berths into the 2024 basketball postseason. Any team not in the top-3, but ranked in the MaxPreps top-15 in the final poll before selection will earn an Division I-IV at-large berth, the section stated.

In Division V and VI, teams not in the league's first three will have to be in the MaxPreps top-10 at the time for playoff selection, SJS stated.

Faith Christian boys basketball, as of Jan. 19, is in third in the SMAL, a half-game up on fourth place, while Faith Christian girls sit in second in the SMAL and 42nd in the full SJS rankings released each week.

MaxPreps does not poll coaches, sportswriters or fans. Nor does its staff make any judgments on the merits of any individual team. Prior season history, school size and comments on message boards are not considered in the MaxPreps Computer Rankings, MaxPreps said in a statement.

The system utilizes the huge number of game results stored in the MaxPreps database. Generally, the more a team wins, the higher the ranking. However, the system takes into account quality wins (against other highly ranked opponents) and strength of schedule, MaxPreps stated.

For example, a team's ranking is hurt more by losing to a team that is ranked below them than a team ranked ahead, according to MaxPreps.

Other factors that will affect the rankings are times when MaxPreps has incomplete or inaccurate information. MaxPreps will correct errors when they are reported. Missing scores and games can be reported on the team's MaxPreps page.

Playoff wins are weighted higher than regular season games, MaxPreps stated.

Movement indicates the up or down movement within the rankings when compared to our previously published rankings. For any additional help with the rankings please email

The section stated that if a school's MaxPreps website is not updated in full the school will be ineligible for an at-large berth.
