Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer were on a collision course with Novak Djokovic on Saturday, calling for "unity, not separation" after their long-time rival superstar was expected to spearhead a breakaway union of professional tennis players. The New York Times claimed that world number one Djokovic is expected to announce his resignation from the presidency of the ATP players' council and help form the PTPA (Professional Tennis Players Association). The PTPA believes it is better-placed to defend the players of the world top 500 who have been badly affected by the coronavirus.
Los Angeles Clippers star Patrick Beverley is taking heat after dismissing the head of the NBA players' union during a heated meeting about the future of the NBA season Wednesday night. According to Yahoo Sports' Chris Haynes, the 6-foot-1 guard continually interrupted NBPA Executive Director Michele Roberts as she tried to explain the financial repercussions of abandoning the league's bubble. When Roberts calmly asked if she could make her point, Beverley curtly responded, "No, I pay your salary," angering his colleagues and derailing the meeting.

The New York Yankees losing streak reached seven games Friday night after they lost both ends of a doubleheader to the New York Mets. In Friday's nightcap, the Yankees suffered the once unimaginable fate of being walked off on their own field. Because the Yankees were the designated visiting team for this makeup game, which was originally slated to be held at Citi Field, the Mets had the final at-bat.
Jon Rahm would have had the low round of the week at the BMW Championship if he had remembered to reach into his pocket on the fifth green. Rahm vaulted into contention Saturday at Olympia Fields, shooting a 4-under 66 that tied for the best score so far on a demanding layout. “I was holding my marker in my pocket, just went at it, and for some reason I just picked up the ball thinking I marked it already,” Rahm said.
It feels inappropriate to turn our attention to Major League Baseball's trade deadline after a week that saw civil unrest reach the generally staid and risk-averse national pastime, and yet the pages of the calendar continue to turn. Teams have until Monday at 4 p.m. to complete deals, and the Red Sox remain in the same position they were before protests reached baseball's shores -- looking to sell in a sea of buyers. There are worse places to be from a leverage standpoint, and there's little doubt Chaim Bloom will be active over the next 48 hours, even if the entire sport effectively spent Wednesday through Friday on hiatus and continues to grapple with its treatment of minorities.
Former New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady simply will not let this one go. Brady jumps at every chance to bring up the Indianapolis Colts' scandal, during which they were accused of pumping crowd noise into the RCA Dome in the mid 2000s. The Colts, after all, were never proven to have done anything wrong.
The Miami Dolphins, eager to give roles to two linebackers signed during the offseason, on Saturday traded Raekwon McMillan, according to a source, sending away the player who was Miami's best defender last season, according to metrics site Pro Football Focus. The Dolphins are receiving the Raiders' fourth-round pick in 2021 but are giving the Raiders their fifth-round pick in 2021. McMillan is earning $1.1 million in the final year of his contract.
With Red Wolves becoming a fan-favorite for the Washington Football Team's new mascot, one fan has brought the name to life with incredibly detailed and realistic logo and uniform designs for the hypothetical name. Bryant Senghor, or @g1zmo3squire on Instagram, released his most updated Red Wolves logo design on Thursday, which features three different uniform designs and two logos modeled by Washington wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Senghor's home uniforms include a burgundy jersey with gold and white stripes on the sleeves, gold pants with burgundy and white stripes down the side, burgundy and gold socks with burgundy shoes and a burgundy helmet with a gold face mask.
Supremely talented athletes who do everything in their power to test the patience of their team if that talent is worth all the baggage they bring with them. Can you tell we are about to talk about running back Le'Veon Bell? This might not be directly relevant to the Steelers but given the number of fans who went out their way to defend Bell when the Steelers didn't re-sign him, these sorts of reminders are always necessary.
The round started with promise and ended in disaster. Here are a few thoughts and observations after Tiger Woods' third round at the BMW Championship, as the reigning Masters champ now has just one round left in his 2019-20 season: • After two days of struggling amid difficult conditions, Woods came out of the gates strong with an early-morning time alongside PGA champ Collin Morikawa. Two birdies in his first five holes helped him make the turn in 2 under, and Woods didn't drop a shot over his first nine holes.
Tom Brady quickly impressed new coach Bruce Arians in his first Tampa Bay Buccaneers scrimmage. Veteran quarterback Brady is preparing for his first NFL season since leaving the New England Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls. It did not take long for the 43-year-old to show his class, leading a 16-play, 98-yard touchdown drive on his first possession as a Bucs player at Raymond James Stadium.
The chemistry between New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton and wide receiver Julian Edelman will be an important factor in the team's 2020 season. Edelman has been full of praise for Newton through the first couple weeks of training camp. Newton has played well in camp and is the favorite to start at quarterback for the Patriots when they host the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 of the regular season.
Tyler Naquin hit a go-ahead double in the 12th inning, then Yadier Molina made a baserunning blunder and got trapped for the final out Saturday to give the Cleveland Indians a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. A day after getting 20 hits in a rout, the Indians totaled just five in winning their fourth in a row. Naquin doubled off Alex Reyes (1-1) to drive in pinch runner Mike Freeman, who started the inning at second base.

Clint Frazier scored the winning run on Dellin Betances' wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the New York Yankees averted their longest losing streak in a quarter-century Saturday with a 2-1 victory over the crosstown Mets. J.A. Happ pitched brilliantly into the eighth at Yankee Stadium and Luke Voit homered early for the injury-ravaged Bronx Bombers, who stopped a seven-game slide that followed six straight wins. The Mets had won three straight and six of eight, including a Subway Series doubleheader sweep Friday at Yankee Stadium.
Boston Bruins forward Nick Ritchie took a careless and reckless penalty midway through the second period of Saturday's game when he crushed Tampa Bay Lightning forward Yanni Gourde with an extremely late hit from behind. The Lightning won Game 4 by a 3-1 margin to take a 3-1 series lead. Gourde remained down on the ice for several moments before slowly making his way to the locker room.
Europe's Ryder Cup heavyweights have lined up to criticise the LPGA Tour for its bizarre, if not disgraceful, treatment of Sophia Popov since the German won the AIG Women's Open last weekend. Ian Poulter, Tommy Fleetwood and Thomas Bjorn all expressed their disgust at the Troon hero not only being denied entry to the second major of the season - the Ana Inspiration in two weeks' time - but also the usual five-year exemption as a Tour member. It is fair to say that Mike Whan, the LPGA commissioner, felt under increasing pressure on Friday after Poulter called the Tour “embarrassing to the game of golf” and Fleetwood termed it “stupid to say the least”.
Green Bay Packers rookie quarterback Jordan Love has meandered through 10 mostly unspectacular practices to start his first NFL training camp. Several Packers beat reporters, including Matt Schneidman of The Athletic and Rob Demovsky of ESPN, recently noted some of the rookie's early struggles. Schneidman put Love in the “falling” category of his training camp stock report, noting “Love has yet to even provide a glimpse at why the Packers traded up to draft him in the first round” while describing early accuracy issues for the young quarterback.
The Oakland Athletics acquired infielder 2019 All-Star infielder Tommy La Stella from the Los Angeles Angels for infielder Franklin Barreto on Friday night. La Stella has a $3.25 million, one-year contract that pays $1,203,704 prorated with the Angels, who acquired him from the Chicago Cubs in November 2018. La Stella also was an exceptional pinch-hitter for the Chicago Cubs before emerging as an everyday player with Los Angeles, and that skill could be valuable once again in a postseason run.
