Ex-Red Sox reliever claimed off waivers by Mariners originally appeared on NBC Sports Boston

Phillips Valdez is headed out west after being designated for assignment by the Boston Red Sox earlier this week.

The right-handed reliever was claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners on Friday, the team announced. He was subsequently optioned to Triple-A Tacoma.

Valdez, 30, amassed a 4.41 ERA in 16 1/3 innings pitched out of the Red Sox bullpen this season. In three seasons (65 appearances) with Boston, he posted a 4.67 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. He notched a 3.06 ERA (17.2 IP) with 19 strikeouts in 14 games with Triple-A Worcester.
