Marcus Smart doesn't need your help to get up, thanks, he's good

Marcus Smart missed about a month after slicing up his hand by punching a picture frame in a hotel room. (I ask you: Who among us hasn’t been there?) He’s been back a couple of weeks, though, wreaking havoc for the Boston Celtics and working on rediscovering his rhythm.

That comes and goes, but if nothing else, we can say with certainty that Smart’s once-mangled right mitt is officially strong enough for him to use it to get off the court in an extremely acrobatic fashion:

Anybody who has had occasion to dip into Weird Celtics Twitter is aware that the fourth-year guard out of Oklahoma State has well-developed “combat muscles.” After hitting the deck following a foul by Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine with just over four minutes to go in the third quarter of an absolute Celtics shellacking, Smart showed us all the true strength of those muscles, elevating off the hardwood with a kip-up that’d make Bruce Lee and Shawn Michaels proud:

It’s even weirder and more compelling when you put the thing down, flip it and reverse it:

Pretty cool thing you did there, Marcus. What were you thinking when you decided to do that instead of just, y’know, sitting up, then regaining your vertical base?

“I wasn’t even trying to do that” is the kind of thing that would sound completely unbelievable out of the mouths of many other NBA players. Marcus Smart, though? I actually kind of believe it. (Sometimes those combat muscles just fire off uncontrollably, you know?)

Smart finished with seven points, four assists and two rebounds in 26 1/2 minutes off the bench as the Celtics utterly dismantled the Bulls, 105-89, in a game that was in no way as close as that final score indicates. Jaylen Brown led five Celtics in double figures with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win, which came without All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving, who sat out to rest a sore left knee that he tweaked in Saturday’s loss to the Houston Rockets. Boston has now won five of six since the All-Star break to improve to 45-20, sitting a game and a half behind the Toronto Raptors for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.
