How many people visited Memphis in 2022? And how does it compare to previous years?
New data from Memphis Tourism shows the Bluff City is continuing its comeback as a tourist destination, exceeding key marks reached prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Here are several key data points from the newly issued report from Memphis Tourism.
How many visitors did Memphis welcome in 2022?
Memphis welcomed more than 11.1 million visitors through a 12-month period ending in October 2022, a 10% or 1 million-visitor increase from the previous period in 2021.
The visitors include a variety of travelers such as leisure visitors, along with meetings, sports and events delegates.

“These strong numbers demonstrate the power our city’s rich music, culture and culinary scenes have in motivating travel to Memphis,” said Kevin Kane, president and CEO of Memphis Tourism, in a statement. “Our strategic roadmap to recovery was implemented in the earliest days of the pandemic with a data driven action plan of marketing initiatives that have resulted in Memphis and Shelby County outperforming the national recovery rate in hotel room demand, putting us on pace to surpass pre-pandemic levels of 2019, a record-breaking year for our destination.”
How did Downtown Memphis hotels perform in 2022?
Hotel demand in Downtown Memphis grew by 35% compared to 2021 and was considered fully recovered compared to year-to-date numbers in 2019.
More than 720,000 Downtown hotel rooms were sold from January to October 2022.

How many hotel rooms were sold in the Memphis area in 2022?
More than 5 million hotel rooms have been sold in the Memphis metro from January through October 2022, a 5% increase from 2021 and 2.9% more than 2019.
How long did Memphis tourists stay in 2022?
The average travel party in Memphis is about two people and they stay nearly 3.5 nights per trip, an increase of 10% from 2021.
Nightly spending for overnight leisure travel party increased 27% in 2022 to about $650 each night.
