Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insists he is right man to lead the club

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that he is the right man to lead Manchester United forward, despite suffering six defeats in their last eight games.

United’s poorest performance of the Solskjaer era came at Goodison Park on Sunday, with Everton running out 4-0 winners.

Solskjaer’s side now face a crucial week in their bid to qualify for next season’s Champions League, with champions Manchester City and fellow top-four contenders Chelsea visiting Old Trafford.

The Norwegian was only appointed on a permanent basis less than a month ago, yet he has already had to reiterate that he believes he is capable of returning United to the top.

“Well I would like to say but it’s not down to me to say that,” Solskjaer claimed on Tuesday, ahead of City’s visit.

“Of course I’m confident in my team and myself and that I will be ready to take this challenge on. I know it’s a big challenge and that is why I came in when I came in.

“I came in here and I said I’m going to enjoy every single second. I don’t like losing but it’s a great challenge and it’s a challenge that all the managers at this club has had.

“When you go through bad results, you have got to be confident enough to say this is the way we’re going do it and we are planning ahead.”

Solskjaer has admitted that he will have to make some difficult decisions on player departures this summer and believes he is the right man to make those calls.

“I would like to think so, yes,” he said. “I like all these boys, I love them because they are great lads but I’ve got to make a decision.

“I’ve got to manage for the club and I’m managing the club and managing the players.

“I help the players but I manage for the club and I’m going to put all my effort, and the staff we’re all going to put all our efforts into making sure we do what we think is right for the club.”
