Manchester United will review closed-circuit TV footage to identify and presumably take action against fans who, for the second consecutive week, chanted a racist Romelu Lukaku song during Saturday’s 1-0 win over Southampton.
The club has condemned the chant, and have worked with anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out to stop it. “The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory,” Kick It Out said in a statement this past week. “Racist stereotypes are never acceptable in football or wider society, irrespective of showing support for a player.”
Lukaku himself urged the fans to do away with the song as well. But it was heard again on Saturday. Its vulgar lyrics are below. After singing it, some visiting United fans also chanted “We’re Man United, we’ll sing what we want.”
United released the following statement after the game:
Manchester United has a zero-tolerance stance on offensive chanting and behaviour. The club and player have been clear in asking for an end to the chant.
The club has worked with relevant bodies and supporters groups in trying to eradicate any offensive behaviour and will take further action against individuals if this continues.
The club is in discussion with the police and has asked for CCTV footage from Southampton and will try to identify those who disrespected the player’s wishes not to sing the song.
The chant goes as follows, and includes vulgar language:
He’s our Belgium scoring genius,
He’s got a 24 inch penis,
Scoring all the goals,
Bellend by his toes.
“Bellend” is a vulgar British slang term for penis. The stereotypical nature of the song is blatant.
Lukaku won Saturday’s game for Man United with a first-half goal, and has had an outstanding start to his time at Old Trafford. Unfortunately, supporters have put his name – and themselves – in headlines for the wrong reason.
