Manchester United’s chances of stealing Alexis Sanchez away from rivals Manchester City have been boosted after reports suggested Pep Guardiola’s men are on the verge of pulling the plug on a deal.

It is believed the Chile international had agreed terms with City, before reports earlier this week suggested Jose Mourinho’s Red Devils placed a £35m bid for the star.

Although that offer was widely touted to end in failure, it now appears as though the Premier League leaders are unwilling to bid more than £20m for the forward, potentially leaving United with a clear run at the former Barcelona man.

According to the Mirror, Arsenal have asked for £35m for their talisman, while the player’s agent Fernando Felicevich wants to bag a fee approaching £5m for helping seal the deal.

It would make the cost for any deal monumental, when including his sky-high wages, and that particular calculation has subsequently put the City hierarchy off a deal for the time being.

The Arsenal man had been widely touted for a move to Guardiola’s City after a £60m deadline day bid fell through at the end of August.

Question marks have been raised over his future ever since, with the 29-year-old’s contract with the Gunners set to expire in July.

But in a move which would sting City fans, Mourinho and United may yet beat their rivals – who were convinced Sanchez was set to join them – to the punch.

Sanchez joined the north London side in 2014, bagging 60 Premier League goals following his £30m move from Barcelona.
