Man found dead in ditch near I-490 in Chili

A man died in what appeared to be a medical incident while on the shoulder of Interstate 490 in Chili Monday morning.

Sgt. Matthew Bottone of the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said that deputies were called to the highway near the Union Street overpass around 11:20 a.m. as it was reported that a body was spotted in a nearby ditch. Deputies located the body on the north side of the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff's Office investigators and the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office, are working together to determine a cause of death.

Bottone said, however, that it appeared that the man "was retrieving items that flew out of the back of the pickup he was operating and had a medical event while retrieving the items."

The westbound lanes of the highway were temporarily closed while deputies investigated at the scene.

Further details of the incident were not released.
