Man charged in NBA player Lorenzen Wright's murder will go to trial in October
The man charged with co-conspiring to kill former NBA player Lorenzen Wright will go to trial in October, according to the Associated Press.
Billy Ray Turner was charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy in 2017. He pleaded not guilty to those charges. On Tuesday, Turner’s attorney and prosecutors agreed on a trial date of Oct. 26 in Memphis.
Turner is accused of co-conspiring with Wright’s ex wife, Sherra Wright, to murder Lorenzen Wright. The 13-year NBA veteran went missing in July 2010. His body was found 10 days later. In July, Sherra Wright pleaded guilty to facilitation of first-degree murder. Sherra Wright could testify at Turner’s trial.
In August, Turner was sentenced to 16 years in prison on separate gun charge.
Turner and Sherra Wright met while attending the same church. Witnesses say Wright came up with the idea to murder her husband and enlisted Turner to help. Authorities believe they recovered one of the guns used in the shooting, which was found in a Mississippi lake.
Lorenzen Wright spent 13 seasons in the NBA. He played for five different teams over that period, though spent the most time with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he played five seasons. Wright’s NBA career ended following the 2008-09 season.
