A woman from Trigg County is dead after a man from central Illinois allegedly broke into her home during a police pursuit and assaulted her, according to Kentucky State Police.
Mary Dullenty, 71, of Cadiz, died at the Trigg County Hospital, police said. Harold Jett, 48, of Taylorsville, Ill., has been charged with murder, second-degree burglary and first-degree fleeing or evading police.
KSP trooper Sarah Burgess said the Dullenty and Jett were related and Jett was in the process of moving to the Trigg County area.
According to the Trigg County sheriff’s department, deputies received a call at noon Thursday about a man shooting at a vehicle on South Road in Cadiz. Jett allegedly stole a shotgun from his cousin’s home, shot into his cousin’s pickup truck and left the area, heading north on Ky. 139 towards Cadiz, according to Sgt. Michelle Kent.
Jett was later located on U.S. 68, Kent said. Jett fled when he spotted the police cruiser and was traveling at estimated speeds of 100 mph into the city limits of Cadiz.
The sheriff’s department estimates the chase lasted another 2 miles once Jett got into town.
KSP said the pursuit ended at Hilltop Street, where Jett allegedly entered Dullenty’s residence. Kent said sheriff’s personnel briefly lost sight of Jett after the chase but eventually found him. He surrendered with no resistance.
After detaining Jett, deputies discovered Dullenty injured inside, state police said.
An autopsy for Dullenty has been scheduled for Saturday morning, according to KSP. Jett was in the Christian County jail Friday.
