These major roads in Putnam, Westchester counties are getting millions for repaving

Stretches of several major roads in Yorktown, Carmel and Kent will get millions in state money for repaving.

State Sen. Pete Harckham and Assemblyman Matt Slater, in a news release, said the projects include:

∎ $5.2 million to resurface Route 35/202 from the Taconic State Parkway interchange to Route 118 in Yorktown.

∎ $3.6 million to resurface Route 52 from Route 311 to Fowler Avenue in Carmel and Kent.

∎ Various other stretches of Route 52 through Kent and Carmel.

Deteriorating stretch in Kent ‘will finally be repaved’

A particular concern has been Route 52 in Kent that has deteriorated over the years, with many residents registering complaints, according to the two lawmakers.

“Your teeth chatter going down it constantly because it's just pothole after pothole after pothole after pothole," said Kent Town Supervisor Jaime McGlasson.

The state money will repave about a third or so of Route 52, up to the split with Route 311, McGlasson said.

McGlasson said officials are thrilled the money is coming, praising the two lawmakers' efforts, but hope more aid will come because there's more of Route 52 that will need work.

“This has been a longstanding issue for the residents of Kent and Putnam County, causing frustration and inconvenience for daily commuters and businesses," said Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne.

More than 60 road projects statewide

The Westchester and Putnam projects are part of $100 million from the fiscal 2023 state budget for projects at 64 locations statewide that see significant traffic.

“The current disrepair of certain sections of our state roadways is unacceptable,” Harckham, a Democrat, said in the statement. “Governor Hochul’s timely influx of funding for necessary improvements on two important area thoroughfares will benefit local residents and small businesses, as well as those traveling through the region.”

Slater, a Republican, said, “Gov. Hochul finally heard my plea for the resurfacing of Route 52 and Route 35/202,” and added “we know our state roads need greater care and investment, both in Putnam and Westchester counties. These corridors are the main arteries that connect our communities. Residents throughout the 94th Assembly District pay some of the highest property taxes in the country, and having safe state roads is not an unfair expectation.”
