Magic Johnson slams Dennis Schroder after playoff loss: 'I don't think he's a Laker'

In the wake of their first-round exit from the NBA playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers have some decisions to make as they look ahead to next season. Lakers legend Magic Johnson offered some advice to his former club on Friday regarding the status of impending free-agent guard Dennis Schroder.

"I don't think he's a Laker," Johnson said in an interview on AM 570 in Los Angeles. "That's just my opinion. I don't know if they're gonna sign him back or not. I don't think he brings the winning mentality and attitude that we need."

"He had a chance to show that in this series. And to me, he failed in this series."

Schroder, whom the Lakers acquired last offseason from the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaged 14.3 points per game as the defending NBA champions fell to the Suns in six games.

"We went through a lot of stuff this year,” Schroder said after the loss. “I’m going to work my ass off to come back here and give everything the fans want. I want to win a championship and I’ll work my ass off this summer to come back and be me.”

The decision on Schroder is one of several facing Lakers GM Rob Pelinka this offseason.

"If he comes back a Laker, I'm gonna support him, I'm gonna cheer for him and all that," said Johnson, who played 13 seasons for the Lakers and served as the team's president of basketball operations from February 2017 to April 2019.

"I just don't think he's a Laker."
