Who made the Dolphins’ initial 53-man roster? A breakdown of each position
The Dolphins trimmed their roster to 53 players ahead of the NFL’s 4 p.m. Tuesday deadline. Here’s a breakdown of each position group. Rookies are denoted with an asterisk.
Quarterback (3): Tua Tagovailoa, Teddy Bridgewater, Skylar Thompson*
▪ Skinny: The Dolphins opted to keep all three of their quarterbacks from training camp, including Thompson, the team’s seventh-round pick. Barring a change, they will enter the regular season with more than two signal-callers for the first time since 2018 — when they had four on the active roster.
Running back (4): Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed
▪ Skinny: The Dolphins cut Sony Michel and kept Gaskin and Ahmed, capable backup running backs who can also contribute on special teams. Either Gaskin or Ahmed will likely be inactive on game days.
Wide receiver (5): Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson Jr., Erik Ezukanma*, Trent Sherfield
▪ Skinny: The Dolphins went relatively light at wide receiver instead of keeping Braylon Sanders or River Cracraft. Ezukanma and Sherfield should play a lot on special teams, but both have shown the potential to contribute on offense.
Tight end/fullback (6): Mike Gesicki, Alec Ingold, Durham Smythe, Hunter Long, Cethan Carter, Tanner Conner
▪ Skinny: The surprise here is keeping undrafted rookie Conner, a converted wide receiver who had a strong start to camp until an injury sidelined him for the last three weeks. He’s a candidate to be placed on injured reserve, which would sideline him for four games and allow him to return at some point this season.
Offensive line (8): Terron Armstead, Liam Eichenberg, Connor Williams, Robert Hunt, Austin Jackson, Greg Little, Michael Deiter, Robert Jones
▪ Skinny: The Dolphins will need to have eight linemen active on game days to make 48 players active on game day. They could seek additional depth in the coming days, especially at tackle.
Defensive line (5): Emmanuel Ogbah, Christian Wilkins, Raekwon Davis, Zach Sieler, John Jenkins
▪ Skinny: Ogbah, Wilkins and Davis give the defensive front a strong trio, while Sieler and Jenkins can spell each of the starters with reliable play against the run and pass.
Outside linebacker (4): Jaelan Phillips, Andrew Van Ginkel, Melvin Ingram III, Trey Flowers
▪ Skinny: Trey Flowers, who signed with the team Monday, is a late arrival but has knowledge of the defense from his days with the New England Patriots. He provides another veteran option as the team rotates players on the edge.
Inside linebacker (5): Jerome Baker, Elandon Roberts, Duke Riley, Channing Tindall*, Sam Eguavoen
▪ Skinny: Baker, Roberts and Riley should all see most of the reps on defense. Tindall and Eguavoen should contribute on special teams with the possibility of Tindall working his way into the defense as the season goes on.
Cornerback (5): Xavien Howard, Nik Needham, Keion Crossen, Noah Igbinoghene, Kader Kohou*
▪ Skinny: Kohou is one of two undrafted rookies to make the roster. Cornerback depth is a concern as Byron Jones will miss the first four games of the season on the reserve/PUP list. The Dolphins could look to add a veteran before Week 1.
Safety (5): Jevon Holland, Brandon Jones, Eric Rowe, Clayton Fejedelem, Elijah Campbell
▪ Skinny: Fejedelem earned a spot with his special teams ability, and Campbell won another with his ability to play multiple positions, including safety and cornerback. Rowe should see playing time with Holland and Jones in sub packages.
Specialists (3): Jason Sanders, Thomas Morstead, Blake Ferguson
▪ Skinny: No surprise here with Sanders and Ferguson returning as kicker and long snapper, respectively. Morstead prepares for his first season as the Dolphins’ punter.
