A 2-0 loss by the Los Angeles Dodgers at Pittsburgh on Aug. 9 expanded the gap between first-place Cincinnati and second-place Los Angeles in the National League West Division to a season-high 13- games. One day earlier, the Reds had polished off a four-game sweep of the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium and were preparing for a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. Cincinnati responded to losing the opener at Chicago by piling up 20 hits while roaring back from deficits of 9-0 and 10-1 to pull out a bizarre 13-10 win in what might have been the wackiest game of the season – so extraordinary that it featured, of all things, highly regarded and respected umpire Doug Harvey changing his mind on a call while making it.
